Why multi-tenancy matters
I’m not convinced that Oracle’s ‘agnosticism’ on that score is as even-handed as its friends would have us believe — even though Intacct, NetSuite and Salesforce.com all run their SaaS infrastructures on Oracle databases.

What NetSuite's flotation says about the software industry. For years, sceptics said that concerns over security and reliability would stifle demand for software delivered using the internet. But both NetSuite and Salesforce have signed up plenty of customers.

The full service suite thus costs $180 per user per annum, and includes a gigayte of storage which can be expanded at a cost of 35 cents per gigabye per month. The different components that make up the suite can be added and removed.

I expect to see a lot of spin from Microsoft's competitors as they try to find ways to detract from the capabilities of Microsoft Online. But it seems to me to be just what we need, right now: secure, reliable, low-touch, and a price that probably can't be beat with internal resources.

Project management SaaS provider Daptiv is releasing actual metrics collected from more than 200 customers who went live on its service in the past nine months. Those figures show the average time from starting a subscription to having live users running productively on the configured system was less than 30 days.

When I spoke to Ribbit in early May, CEO Ted Griggs told me his company was out to obsolete telcos: “Phone companies aren’t open. That’s a problem,” he said. But yesterday, Ribbit sold out to BT, which the FT’s Chris Nuttall helpfully reminded us “began as a telegraphic service in 1868.”

It is another set of opinion pieces which suggest that cloud computing is only an over-hyped and fundamentally a dangerous approach to meeting an organization’s IT and business needs which concerns me. These articles and commentaries appear to be aimed at the least knowledgeable reader. They exploit the amorphous nature of the ‘cloud computing’ term. What’s harder to get your arms around and, in turn, your head? Clouds.
